Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has blasted the alleged distribution of Hilux trucks, Hummer buses and other luxury vehicles for 2027 campaign mobilisation, describing it as a shameful display of insensitivity amid severe economic hardship.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Obi said it was alarming that political actors would prioritise expensive campaign convoys while millions of Nigerians battle hunger, joblessness and insecurity.
“At a time when Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity, allocating scarce public resources to distribute luxury vehicles is not only insensitive—it is a serious moral failure,” he said.
Obi lamented that citizens who can no longer afford school fees, medical care or basic necessities are forced to watch political leaders flaunt exotic vehicles bought with public funds.
“This tragic misplacement of priorities is unacceptable,” he said. “Instead of providing food for the hungry or ensuring access to healthcare, those in power are busy parading brand-new Land Cruisers and Hummers.”
The former governor warned that such actions amount to an abuse of public trust and undermine the very essence of leadership, which should be rooted in compassion and service.
“This is not governance. It is an abuse of public trust disguised as political strategy,” he said. “Leadership at this moment should be about securing communities, restoring hope to the unemployed and caring for the vulnerable.”
Obi said Nigeria cannot continue on a path of waste and insensitivity, urging leaders to embrace responsibility and accountability in the face of rising poverty and despair.
Despite the grim realities, he expressed optimism that the country can chart a better course, concluding that “a New Nigeria is not only necessary, it is possible.”
