Fresh political tension has gripped Oyo State following allegations of a plan to impeach Governor Seyi Makinde, with leading figures in the state moving quickly to deny the claims and downplay the situation.
The controversy deepened after the Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Gbenga Oyekola, dissociated himself from any move aimed at creating friction between the legislative and executive arms of government.
Oyekola, who spoke after a closed-door meeting at the Governor’s Lodge, reiterated his loyalty to the governor and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that some individuals were working to destabilise the state through false narratives.
He disclosed that the Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, had informed lawmakers of alleged political approaches made to him. According to Oyekola, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, was said to have offered the Speaker an All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives ticket and financial backing—an offer he reportedly declined.
He added that the Speaker also recounted a separate meeting with former First Lady, Florence Ajimobi, involving similar overtures, which were equally rejected.
The Chief Whip maintained that he was not involved in any such discussions, emphasising his commitment to preserving peace and supporting the current administration.
In a swift reaction, the Olubadan dismissed the impeachment allegations as unfounded. Through his media aide, Adeola Oloko, Oba Ladoja described the claims as “baseless,” stressing that traditional rulers have no constitutional role in the removal of elected officials.
The palace also highlighted contradictions in the unfolding narratives, referencing an earlier claim by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, who had alleged a counter-plot against the monarch by the state government.
Meanwhile, Speaker Ogundoyin has denied accusations that he received financial inducement from APC-linked actors to facilitate any impeachment process. He described the allegation as politically motivated and intended to undermine the stability of the state.
Although he acknowledged being approached with offers, the Speaker insisted he rejected them, maintaining that his allegiance to Governor Makinde, the PDP, and the people of Oyo State remains intact.
He further stated that the Assembly under his leadership remains committed to upholding constitutional principles and sustaining a cooperative relationship with the executive arm.
On his recent visit to the Olubadan, Ogundoyin clarified that it was a routine traditional engagement to inform the monarch of his governorship ambition and seek blessings, dismissing claims that it was linked to any political plot.
He called on residents to disregard what he termed misinformation designed to incite division, as efforts continue to ease tensions across the state.
