Panic gripped Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday as gunmen opened fire near Afor Market Junction, leaving several people feared dead.
The attackers, described as unidentified armed men, reportedly arrived in a sudden, coordinated strike, shooting at random and causing residents to flee in different directions.
Witnesses recounted horrifying scenes. One resident said, “The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people. Nobody understands why this happened. Our community is in shock.”
Another eyewitness added, “It was frightening. They came out of nowhere in a commando-style attack and started shooting. Everyone ran for their lives.”
Videos currently circulating online show terrified residents scampering to safety as bodies lay motionless in pools of blood.
The President General of Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement, condemning what he described as a deliberate attempt to destabilise the peaceful community.
“This evening, I received with deep shock the tragic news of an attack at the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia,” he said.
“The incident resulted in multiple casualties, carried out by unknown assailants. I condemn this senseless violence. Security agencies have been contacted and investigations have commenced to identify the perpetrators.”
Okoye urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, assuring them that efforts were underway to restore peace and protect lives.
“My deepest sympathies go to the affected families. As a community, we stand united in pursuing justice and safeguarding our people,” he added.
The Anambra Police Command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, was unavailable for confirmation when contacted.
But a senior police officer, speaking anonymously, disclosed that police operatives had already begun investigating the attack.
“We condemn these heinous acts and assure the public that we are taking immediate steps to track down those responsible,” the source said.
